During the Covid-19 pandemic, college courses were forced to rapidly switch to online learning. In the University of Michigan's Elementary Programming Concepts class, we iterated on the course format each semester, refining it based on our growing understanding of virtual learning. In Fall 2021, I took charge of the Scope Team, leading the restructuring of the final project. I created a detailed project plan to ensure the successful completion of the overhaul by our staff of over 30 before its launch to students.
Creating such a detailed project plan taught me a lot about the importance of balancing the triple constraint: time, cost, and scope. My work included scoping the project, discovering and analyzing stakeholders, breaking down the work into concrete tasks, and creating a Gantt chart using Microsoft Project.
I used a variety of methods and tools to create a comprehensive project plan including an executive summary, scope statement, stakeholder analysis, work breakdown structure, budget, quality management plan, risk management plan, and network diagram.
This resulted in a more accurate time estimate for the completion of the project which prevented a budget deficit for staff paychecks. In addition, quality and risk management metrics ensured that the restructured project ran smoothly once it was launched to students.
